Refusing to Settle for Mediocrity

March 16, 2010

Brandon, Shaun and Ryan Boyd, sons of Keynote staff members, Bruce and Julie Boyd, have been performing and traveling over the last year or so as 3Union. In addition to challenging students with the gospel, these brothers also talk openly about their own commitments to honor the Lord with their lives and their decisions.

3Union has been keeping the pavement hot over the last several weeks with gigs in Texas, Missouri, Michigan, Kansas and Virginia. Last week, God did some amazing things through this teen rock band as they partnered with a couple of teenagers in Virginia.

Lisa and Jonathan Gilson (daughter and son of Keynote alums, Tom & Sara Gilson) took some significant steps of faith to spearhead events in their community. At one middle school, 100 enthusiastic students showed up for an after school concert, and 24 of them indicated decisions to receive Christ! A few days later, over 300 students and adults came to a community concert at the church. Another 13 first-time decisions to trust Christ were indicated and 73 other people recommitted their lives to the Lord!

After the concert, Debbie Noble, a member of the community, sent an email to the principal in appreciation for allowing the band to perform. An excerpt, used per Debbie’s permission, appears below:

“Hello Mrs. Skinner,

I accompanied my neighbor, a YMS student,  to the “3union” concert at the school yesterday afternoon.  I must say I was most impressed with the caliber of the band members.  As a musician, I appreciated their execution of rhythms, chord progressions, etc.  Many young rock groups are simply producing “noise.”  Not so with these musicians.  In addition, I was impressed with their core values (refusing to settle for mediocrity, dreaming big, respect for authority, etc.).  Wow! What great examples for middle schoolers!  I saw them interacting with the students, signing autographs, etc. after the concert; they seemed genuine and authentic.  I found it noteworthy that the musicians were able to share their faith in a manner that was inviting but non-threatening.  Thanks for allowing such great role models to be in front of our students.”

Best wishes,

Debbie Noble
Former YMS parent and community member
