Creating Beauty and Goodness in Our World

February 7, 2012

[Today’s post is from Keynote staff members, Bryan and Laurie Horvath who serve in New York City as partners with the International Arts Movement (IAM), founded by Japanese-American artist, Mako Fujimura.]

“IAM is a cultural arts movement dedicated to inspiring all people to create more beauty and goodness in our world.”

We help inspire artists and catalysts, who see the brokenness and fragmentation in our world, to act, create, build and restore … to be generative. Conversations about art and beauty can often lead to deep, meaningful questions about life and faith.

Here are a few stories of people who engaged with IAM and were inspired to address the fractured things they see around them:

  • A young artist in Oklahoma stepped out in faith by renting warehouse space for a community of art studios. He invited his peers who had been creating art in isolation to come together for inspiration and shared space.
  • An artist in New York City attended a photography exhibition hosted by IAM and was inspired to start a social justice non-profit to benefit the homeless.
  • An Indianapolis businessman who attended an IAM conference was inspired to address the failing healthcare system in his company. IAM gave him language to discuss these issues and a different kind of mindset that works outside the box. He challenged his HR team to recreate their medical care, bringing together goodness, beauty and truth. The resulting new system was significant for the company and the employees and in one year, they saw a much healthier work force, far fewer absences, and saved $3.5 million dollars in medical costs.

It has been a joy to take people on this journey, to help them wrestle with the deep questions of art, faith and humanity and to see more glimpses of God’s Kingdom here and now.
