Friday Flashback

February 18, 2011

[In 2011 Keynote celebrates 45 years of ministry. We thought we would use our Friday posts to look back on God’s faithfulness through the years.]

Today we have an excerpt about The New Folk from The Collegian*, student government association newspaper from George Williams College. It’s a great overview of the band’s program and the message they shared.

“…President Hamlin then turned the program over to the New Folk.

The group, consisting of four women and five men ascended to the stage and started the festivities with ‘We are Crossing Jordan’s River.’ Tom Woodard, special interest coordinator of S.G.A. explained that this convocation was being presented by the S.G.A and then introduced the ‘Greatest Sound in America’ – The New Folk. They followed their formal introduction with ‘Road to freedom.’

Bob, the leader of the group, gave a bit of history as to where the group had been during their 13 month major college tour of America. They spent Easter at Daytona Beach, had been at Michigan State during a three-hour tornado but Bob liked Chicago best because of the climate and coughing sparrows. [I left this in because it made me laugh!]

The group then presented two popular songsĀ  – ‘Up Up and Away’ and a very funny and well done Bach version of the Beatles’ ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand.’

Bob … introduced the rest of the group. This was followed by the song ‘You Were On My Mind’ and constituted a change in format of their presentation.

Bob explained that the group had a two-fold mission, first of all to entertain and secondly to help college students find a true picture of Christ. Dennis started the ball rolling by singing about a man who bought a young slave and set him free. Bob explained that the New Folk was a product of the Campus Crusade for Christ and it was hoped that they could illustrate God’s plan for love of life by hearing how Christ had affected the members of the group….

…Bob concluded the presentation of Christ’s influences with an analogy of a circle, worry and doubt symbolically, with a throne in the middle. Christ is asking all of us to allow Him to enter and rule on the throne and by giving us peace of mind He will also give us a reason to live as He lives in and through us. All God asks is that we behold, hear him and then he shall enter. For this we should thank the Lord Jesus for dying, understanding and giving us a chance for a fruitful life….”
