Swerve 2011

Post by guest blogger Derek Vance. Derek Vance is currently on his second Summer Project with Keynote, and on tour with one of our Summer Project bands – Swerve. He is a senior at Brown University, where he studies Public Policy and Religion.

Swerve: to turn sharply or suddenly from a course. Just keep that in mind.

We had a plan for this summer. We would spend 4 weeks living in a hotel in Indianapolis, we would move out and drive to Florida, spend 3 weeks on tour, and come back with great stories. Well, we’ve had to change that plan a couple of times already, and we’ve only been on tour for a couple of days. Swerve, the band, is already living up to its name.

Swerve was originally scheduled to begin driving to Florida on Tuesday June 14th. Some of our earliest ministry concerts fell through though, which meant that we would not be hitting the road until a few days later than planned… 1st Swerve.

Because we were expecting to leave for Florida on Tuesday, we had already moved out of our hotel. We to find somewhere to stay for 3 nights on incredibly short notice… Swerve #2.

While we were hanging around Indy waiting to hit the road, an opportunity to serve and perform for the Response Church, an inner-city church in downtown Indianapolis, showed up. Swerve #3.

We finally hit the road on Saturday morning. The plan was to drive uninterrupted from Indianapolis to Macon, Georgia. That’s what happened… for roughly 287 minutes. Just north of Nashville, Tennessee, we watched as a car shot across the median right in front of us. One of our vans had to Swerve around the car as it crossed behind, while the other van had to Swerve through the wreckage the car caused. We made it through unscathed, but we lost a fender and tire from our trailer. Swerve numero cuatro.

Our plans changed, but I don’t consider that to be a bad thing. At our concert at the Response Church in Indianapolis, we had the privilege of sharing the gospel with 75 women. 10 women indicated that they accepted Christ, and 10 more said that they wanted to learn more about God. That wouldn’t have happened if our plans hadn’t changed. I know that none of us in the band would choose our plans over the Swerves we had to make now that we know the result… well, I think we could’ve lived without having to Swerve through wrecked cars at 75mph.

God is teaching us through all of these changes of plans that His plans are perfect, and though we try to pretend like they are, our plans can’t hold a candle to His. Please join us in praying for more Swerves.
